We recently changed the recipe to our Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips, and have added milk as one of the ingredients. This change has impacted some customers’ ability to enjoy this product, and we apologize to any who have been inconvenienced by this. Quality and safety are of utmost importance to Ghirardelli.

How often does Ghirardelli change the recipes of products?

We’re always looking to improve our recipes and are frequently taking consumer demand, industry trends and wellness considerations under advisement when reviewing the ingredients in our products. While we work to alert our consumers to any major changes to our recipes, we encourage those with allergies or food restrictions to check the ingredient statement on our products prior to using.

Why did Ghirardelli change the recipe?

We’ve been committed to creating premium chocolate products for more than 160 years and our chocolatiers are regularly evaluating the quality, taste, and production of our chocolate. This recipe change improved the overall quality and consistency of our Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips.

How do I know if my Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips contain milk?

Our ingredient statements are included on the packaging of all our products, including the Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips. If milk is an ingredient in the product, milk will clearly be listed in the ingredient statement. If milk is not an ingredient, the packaging will include the advisory statement “May Contain milk" because the product is made on shared equipment that also produces milk chocolate chips. 

Why wasn’t this change announced before product hit shelves?

We’re regularly evaluating our recipes, and when a change is made we update our packaging, including our ingredient statements. While we updated the package ingredient statement in this instance, it turns out some consumers did not recognize this and were not aware of the change. For that, we apologize and have taken steps to ensure we’re spreading the word through organizations like Food Allergy Research Education (FARE).

If I have Semi-Sweet Chocolate Baking Chips containing milk, but I can’t consume milk, what should I do with them?

Please bring the product back to where it was purchased and you will be given a refund.

Does Ghirardelli have any products that are safe for people with milk allergy?

We have several dark chocolate products that do not have milk as an ingredient. They are, however, made on shared equipment that also produces milk-containing products as well as possibly other allergens. As a result, they are labeled with an appropriate advisory statement calling out the allergen of concern.
