Our chocolate is as rich as our history.
At Ghirardelli, our chocolate is as rich as our heritage. We started in San Francisco more than 160 years ago, making us America’s oldest continuously operating chocolate maker. All of our experience, passion and commitment result in a delicious legacy you can taste with every bite of our premium chocolate products.
Our rich history of chocolate inventions.
We thrive on innovation, a tradition that began with our enterprising founder Domingo Ghirardelli, who arrived in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush and soon built a flourishing chocolate company. In 1867, one of our employees discovered a process for treating cocoa beans that enhanced their flavor and became an industry standard. More than a century later, we’re still working hard to create products and packaging our customers love. We were one of the first companies to include specific cacao content on our labels in order to help people find the perfect chocolate for their taste. (The higher the percentage of cacao content, the more intense the chocolate flavor.) Also, we were the first chocolate company to launch stand up bags, an easy way for people to choose and enjoy chocolate. One of our more recent innovations is minis chocolates, a shareable, on-the-go treat that debuted in 2014.
The best beans make the best chocolate.
We’re proud of the fact we’re one of the few companies in America that controls the entire chocolate-making process from bean to bar; that is, from cocoa bean to finished product. By the way, did you know cocoa beans aren’t really beans? They’re seeds from a fruit that grows on a tree whose botanical name means, quite fittingly, “fruit of the gods.” We’re picky about our beans and choose only the best. We source them from different parts of the world--Africa, Southeast Asia and South America; the beans from each region have their own flavor characteristics—then blend them together to develop our rich, complex chocolate flavors. Our proprietary bean blends plus our unique methods of roasting and processing all add up to one thing: delicious, premium chocolate products for you every time.
The scoop on how to say our name.
Even some of our most loyal fans still wonder how to say Ghirardelli. From the beginning, people used to stumble over the pronunciation of our Italian-born founder’s name, Domingo Ghirardelli, which might explain why he called the San Francisco confectionery shop he founded in 1852 Ghirardely & Girard. The business eventually became the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, and to help solve the pronunciation problem, our early packaging and advertising campaigns featured a picture of a parrot with the words “Say Gear-ar-delly.” Today, no matter how you say it, the name Ghirardelli stands for rich, premium chocolate.
A vibrant history of creative brand spirit.
We were one of the first American companies to understand and tap into the power of promotion. Starting in the late 1800s, we hired the best available artists and advertising experts to spread the Ghirardelli name and logo throughout the West. Since 1923, the famous Ghirardelli light bulb sign, now a historic landmark, has welcomed visitors and ships to San Francisco. More recently, initiatives such as our Holiday Make a Card campaign in 2013 have helped chocolate lovers share digital gifts and unique cards.
