Location: Orange County, Los Angeles County, Inland Empire

Overall, the role of the District Manager is to lead, develop and execute a superior retail merchandising execution force for a defined geographic market and customer base.  The DM is to build and lead the selling capability of their team members with the defined goal to create “Ghirardelli presence” in assigned retail stores.


Scope of Responsibilities

Recruiting and Staffing:

  • Work to maintain a full merchandising retail force for assigned geographic market
  • Work closely with Region Manager of Sales Merchandising & Human Resources for assistance with sourcing and hiring highly qualified candidates
  • Collect resumes for future open positions
  • Maintain interview and hiring logs
  • Participate in and work through job fairs, online recruiting sources, etc to find and build talent pool


  • Ensure newly hired merchandisers complete orientation and training sessions.
  • Provide quality in-field coaching as well as continuous learning and on going sales merchandising development
  • Train new hires on the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company standards of retail merchandising

Merchandising & Scheduling:

  • Ensure all assigned stores are set to customer specific schematics – fix issues by store working with customer store management personnel
  • Ensure proper rotation and freshness of product for assigned geography – coach team to maximize efforts and provide consumers best possible freshness of Ghirardelli Chocolate
  • Ensure all merchandising activities are properly executed at store level to support Ghirardelli sales, distribution, displays goals
  • Responsible for managing merchandising resources efficiently (hours, mileage, costs)
  • Development and implementation of merchandising schedule for assigned teams
  • Responsible for tracking and managing headcount/hourly budget
  • Approve timesheets for assigned team members
  • Work in field, at minimum, 4 days per week with team members to build selling skills, train basic merchandising activities and ensure a “manager” in the field
  • Manage hours (straight time, OT) as well as rest/meal breaks to ensure compliance 
  • Maintain process to track mileage and expenses entered, keep records

Employee Counseling:

  • Continually monitor performance results and build selling skills of retail merchandisers
  • Provide on-going coaching, as needed
  • Conduct regular performance reviews using developed benchmark performance standards


  • Weekly update to RMSM – merchandising schedules, merchandising hours used, over-time issues and why, pertinent issues, sales objectives accomplished
  • Conduct sales team meetings as needed
  • Cover sales territories in times of need (i.e. a vacant route) and high volume seasonal “pushes”

Best Practices include:

  • Administration days – Limited to one day per week
  • Coaching days – Monday through Thursday.  Utilize coaching forms during all field coaching days

Education & Work Experience

  • BA/BS Degree Preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in Consumer Packaged Goods industry
  • Must have been a retail supervisor within the last 3 years


Working Conditions

  • 3-4 days/week in markets calling on retail stores.  A lot of in and out of cars
  • Working in retail conditions, building displays, fixing shelves, and pulling stock from the backroom.  There will be lifting
  • Office out of home
  • Occasional to Constant Repetitive Fine Manipulation (keyboarding, ten key, writing)
  • Rare to Occasional Simple Grasping
  • Rare to Occasional ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Occasional to Constant Sitting
