Summary:

The Senior Operations Accountant ensures the accurate and timely entry of financial data and reporting to management. These areas include but are not limited to, Fixed Asset Accounting, Operations Accounting, Cross-functional Capital Projects, and analysis of variances with pro-active solutions.

Scope of Responsibilities

Fixed Asset Accounting

  • Direct responsibility for managing and improving all aspects of the Fixed Assets accounting system.
  • Work cross-functionally with capital project owners to develop reporting and monitoring project costs.
  • Manage additions, disposals and impairments to ensure appropriateness with external and internal capitalization policies, including reconciling the general ledgers. Partner with project managers on capitalization of assets ensuring assets are being properly classified and assigned the appropriate in-service dates and useful lives.
  • Execute and monitor controls for the accurate recording of fixed assets in the system.  Identify possible weaknesses or opportunities to strengthen controls and review with the Corporate Accounting Manager.
  • Track existing fixed assets and periodically substantiate recorded balances via physical inventories and/or confirmations.
  • Prepare audit and tax schedules relating to fixed assets, and assist the auditors in their inquiries. Prepare and file property tax returns.
  • Work with FP&A on the budget and updating forecasts of capital assets.

Operations Accounting

  • Direct responsibility for the inventory flow, operations analysis and systems flow. Work cross functionally to research and resolve various issues impacting inventory accuracy or month-end close process. Interact with cross-functional teams such as manufacturing, supply chain, procurement, marketing, finance and other departments to share knowledge and resolve issues.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end closing tasks are performed, which include account analysis and reconciliations, accruals, journal entries and various month-end/year-end reports and schedules including inventory reconciliations, journal entries, cost of goods sold analysis, inventory on hand reports, etc.
  • Analyze inventory cost variances and other accuracy issues impacting perpetual inventory records on a day to day basis.
  • Review and maintain standard costs in the bill of materials.
  • Lead the development of standard operating procedures for cycle counts at all inventory locations. Perform audits of cycle count procedures at internal and 3rd party locations.
  • Ensure financial records are compliant with our policies and procedures. Assist with maintaining and developing strong internal controls. Revise/create inventory process narratives and standard operating procedures.
  • Develop effective and efficient processes for areas such as shrink, obsolete and excess inventory and lower-of-cost-or market (LCM) valuation to minimize the risk of losses to the organization.
  • Work with FP&A on the budget and updating forecasts.

Specific Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interact effectively with others in a team and individually on all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to set priorities in a rapid paced changing environment and to be self-disciplined and consistent. Willingness and flexibility to vary hours and efforts according to deadlines
  • Strong problem solving and auditing skills.
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Familiarity with JDE is a plus

Education & Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an accounting-related major and 2-3 years of related work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Public accounting experience or CPA a plus.

Working Conditions

  • Spends 90% time at desk working on computer or telephone.
  • Spends 5% travelling.
